Abstract:

This seminar explores the intersection of seismology and public policy in advancing multi-hazard early warning systems (MHEWS) and risk governance across Africa. Drawing on regional cases from earthquake-prone zones in Africa, we will discuss operational strategies for integrating seismic monitoring, instrumentation advancements, and policy frameworks to enhance disaster resilience.

Key topics include the role of real-time data networks, community-based risk assessment, and international collaborations in mitigating geohazards such as earthquakes, volcanoes, and landslides. Emphasis will be placed on tailoring these approaches to African contexts, addressing challenges like resource constraints and institutional capacity building, while highlighting successful implementations from the African Seismological Commission (AfSC) and related initiatives.
