Abstract: Continental rifts are complex tectonic features shaped by geodynamic processes operating across scales. In this presentation, I will use results from numerical and plate tectonic models to explore the cross-scale interactions of continental rifts. In doing so, I will present a process chain linking plate motions, lithospheric thinning, fault network evolution, decompression melting, volatile ascent, and rift-related CO₂ degassing, shedding light on the interconnected mechanisms operating during rift formation and their links to Earth System evolution.

Biography:  Sascha Brune is head of the Geodynamic Modelling Section at the GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences and holds a professorship at the University of Potsdam. He uses numerical models to investigate plate tectonics, lithosphere dynamics, surface processes and their links to long-term climate change and natural hazards. With his recently started ERC Consolidator grant EMERGE he studies CO₂ degassing from continental rifts through geological time.
