GEO@EAIFR SEMINAR
Professor Alberto Armigliato will discuss Tsunamis.
ICTP-EAIFR is pleased to have Professor Alberto Armigliato deliver a seminar on Tuesday February 18, 2025.
Title: Tsunamis: phenomenology, modelling and real-world cases
Abstract: Tsunamis are rare events compared to other natural hazards, but their consequences can be catastrophic, as shown by some of the events occurred in the last 20 years (2004 Indian Ocean, 2011 Tohoku, 2018 Palu and Anak Krakatau, 2022 Hunga Tonga). Tsunami waves can be generated by different mechanisms, including coastal/submarine earthquakes, landslides, volcanic eruptions, atmospheric disturbances. After presenting some phenomenological aspects of tsunamis and examples of the main physical observables involved, I will discuss the main principles adopted in modeling the phases of generation, propagation and impact of tsunamis on coasts. I will finally present some real-world examples, taken from ongoing research regarding the coasts of Italy.
When: 18 February at 4:00 p.m. (Kigali time).
Where: EAIFR Conference room, fifth floor Einstein Building, CST Campus, University of Rwanda.
