About the workshop
The ICTP East African Institute for Fundamental Research (ICTP-EAIFR), University of Rwanda, in collaboration with the Seismology Office of the Slovenian Environmental Agency, is organising a three-day workshop to train participants in earthquake detection and location techniques. Participants will learn about the state-of-the-art seismological knowledge and tools currently available to the scientific community.
The overarching goal is to strengthen regional and national scientific capacity in earthquake and volcano research in a vulnerable region like East Africa, thereby enhancing resilience to geohazards. The workshop also aims to motivate local participation in international research and collaboration on earthquake and volcanic studies in the Virunga volcanic region.
The programme is built around computer exercises that deepen understanding of algorithms for earthquake detection, location and magnitude estimation.
