ICTP-EAIFR Welcomes New Postgraduate Students
The ICTP-East African Institute for Fundamental Research (ICTP-EAIFR) is pleased to welcome its new cohort of postgraduate students for the 2025–2027 academic years. The students, drawn from across Africa and beyond, have joined the Institute to pursue advanced training in physics and related disciplines.
As a partner institute of the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) under the auspices of UNESCO, and hosted by the University of Rwanda through the Ministry of Education, ICTP-EAIFR provides a unique environment for high-level research and postgraduate training in physics, aimed at strengthening the continent’s scientific community.
The new students took part in an orientation session led by ICTP-EAIFR Director Dr. Catherine Meriaux, who welcomed them and outlined the Institute’s academic programmes and research opportunities. Faculty members introduced the various research groups, while senior students shared their experiences and advice for success at EAIFR.
“We are thrilled to welcome a new generation of scientists who will contribute to Africa’s growing scientific community,” said Dr. Meriaux.
Ms. Joelle Safi, formerly a manager at a Kigali-based firm, said she was excited to pursue higher education here at Kigali in Rwanda and aims to become a renowned scientist in the foreseeable future.
Mr. Jean de Dieu Dukundane, a former physics teacher in here in Rwanda, expressed his enthusiasm for developing his skills further in order to give back to his community and country at large.
New student Mr. David Nduta from Kenya shared:
“Joining ICTP-EAIFR is a dream come true — I’m eager to learn and contribute to research that matters. I see this opportunity as a privilege to contribute to personal and Africa’s development.”
All students expressed appreciation for the warm welcome and the support offered by ICTP-EAIFR’s partners, visiting scholars, staff, and director.
The atmosphere throughout the welcome session was one of warmth and familiarity, with both students and staff engaging as though among long-time colleagues — a testament to the institute’s culture of unity and shared purpose.
The orientation concluded with a rendition of the East African Anthem played from YouTube by students, followed by campus tours and visits to nearby suburbs in Nyarugenge, Kigali.
The students — both new and senior — have already begun their intensive coursework, including seminars and collaborative projects with international researchers.
ICTP-EAIFR looks forward to a productive and inspiring academic year ahead.
