On NO-vember 3rd, 2025, the ICTP–East African Institute for Fundamental Research (EAIFR), Kigali, Rwanda, welcomed a new Director. The office had remained vacant since the departure of the former director and several members of staff — a period marked by resilience and dedication from the Institute’s remaining team of courageous women and men.
Together with the entire University of Rwanda community, EAIFR proudly received Dr. Catherine Meriaux, Ph.D., as its new Director. In her own words, embracing the vision of H.E. Paul Kagame, President of Rwanda, and advancing the right attitude toward success in fundamental scientific research across Rwanda, East Africa, and Africa at large, was “not something she had never thought she would contribute to”.
Over the Institute’s challenging years, Dr. Meriaux has voluntarily and steadfastly positioned EAIFR as a pole of excellence, attracting a vibrant community of top-notch international scientists, high-profile officials, and visiting delegations — all contributing to the training of young physicists and strengthening institutional visibility for national development.

“This announcement comes with NO gigantic celebration or fireworks, but rather with a new direction — a renewed pursuit of excellence that we aim for as a community. I think with our students, our able partners, and our staff, we are all giving our best.
And to the students especially: I am proud of you! This, I can say for sure.”
— Dr. Catherine Meriaux, Professor of Geophysics and Director, EAIFR Kigali, Rwanda.
As NO-vember and the years continue, EAIFR steps boldly into a new chapter — one of focus, growth, and renewed commitment to scientific excellence in Africa.
