Prof. Anna Sanpera from the Universitat Autònoma Barcelona (Spain) who is visiting EAIFR will give a planned series of lectures on Mondays at 2pm GMT+2 (Kigali Time) on the 2nd Quantum Revolution. The first lecture will be on Quantum Information Science and Quantum Technologies.

Many people are interested in 'Quantum Computing/Computation/Computers' these days. These topics are part of a broader one which can simply be described as the 2nd Quantum Revolution (2QR). The first quantum revolution happened around 1925. As part of the 2QR, practical quantum computers will radically change the landscape for solving certain classes of problems. However, the 2QR is more than just quantum computing.
Title: The second quantum revolution: implications for science and technology
Abstract: The so-called second quantum revolution refers to the precise understanding and manipulation of the quantum properties that appear at microscopic level. Such properties, governed by the laws of quantum mechanics, permits developing completely different technologies concerning, for example, communication and computational tasks. But the precise knowledge and control of quantum properties is also crucial for basic science research and hopefully will have a large impact in society regarding for instance health issues, energy, safety, and others, in the forthcoming digital era. Along these three lectures I will give a very general overview of quantum technologies: principles, uses and future developments.

Short bio: Anna Sanpera Trigueros. Ph.D in physics in 1992 from University Autònoma Barcelona (Spain). From 1993-1996, research fellow at Oxford University (UK). From 1996-1998 European research fellow at Univ. Paris-Saclay (France). 1999-2005 Assistant Professor at Leibnitz University Hannover (Germany). Since 2005 ICREA-research professor at the group of Quantum Information and Quantum phenomena , University Autònoma Barcelona (Spain). During these years I have been invited scientist/visiting professors at: Kavli Institute of Theoretical Physics (KITP), Santa Barbara, USA (2010); KITP, Beijing, China (2016); Univ. Mariland, USA (2018), International Center for Theoretical Physics (ICTP), Trieste /Kigali (2022). My research interests are quite interdisciplinary and range from quantum information theory, in particular entanglement theory, to quantum gases, condensed matter and out-of-equilibrium open quantum systems. I am strongly involved in scientific education and science popularization.
