GEO@EAIFR Webinar Series 2024
Professor Tobias Fischer from the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences of the University of New Mexico will discuss the sources of fluids in rifted continental margins.
The East African Institute for Fundamental Research (EAIFR) and the International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) wish to inform those who may be interested of a GEO@EAIFR webinar. This seminar will take place on May 21, 2024 and will be broadcast live on ZOOM. It will also be recorded and later posted on the ICTP-EAIFR YouTube channel, where one can find the previous recorded GEO@EAIFR webinars. Below all the details:
Speaker: Professor Tobias Fischer, Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences, University of New Mexico, USA
Title: Rifts and fluids: the case of East Africa
When: May 21, 2024 at 16:30 (Kigali time).
Register in advance for this meeting by clicking here.
All are very welcome.
Abstract: This talk will address the sources of fluids in rifted continental margins. I will focus on the role of carbon in the mantle below the East African Rift and its influence on volcanism and rifting. From a global perspective, I will highlight the significance of continental rifts in the global deep carbon budget.
Biography: Tobias Fischer has received his PhD from Arizona State University in the USA. He did a post-doc at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and since 2000 has been on the faculty at the University of New Mexico. His research group utilizes the chemistry of gas discharges to investigate processes related to active volcanism and hydrothermal systems in arcs, continental rifts and hot spots. From 2011 to 2019 he lead the Deep Carbon Degassing initiative funded by the Deep Carbon Observatory and since 2018 he is leading the Community Network for Volcanic Eruption Response (CONVERSE) initiative to coordinate research at volcanic eruptions.
